Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has renewed calls for the establishment of a federal fire service facility in Kogi Central following a tragic fire incident in Okene.
The lawmaker made this known in a statement shared via her official Instagram page, @natashaakpoti, where she reacted to a fire outbreak at Old Zango, near the Total fuel station in Okene, which led to loss of lives and destruction of properties.
She described the incident as not isolated, noting that similar fire outbreaks have occurred in the area over the years, highlighting the urgent need for improved emergency response systems.
Akpoti-Uduaghan revealed that she had facilitated approval for a Federal Fire Service facility in the district, citing an official letter from the agency confirming the development. According to her, the proposed project has already attracted preliminary actions, including site visits by relevant authorities.
However, she explained that the project is yet to commence due to the absence of capital funding in the 2025 budget.
The senator said she would engage the minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, after the holidays to ensure the immediate takeoff of the project, while also expressing sympathy to victims of the fire incident.
