The First Lady of Imo State, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma has intervened to rescue a widow from Awo-Omamma in the Oru East Local Government Area who was allegedly subjected to harmful traditional practices after the death of her husband.
The development was shared on Instagram via her verified page, @he_chiomauzodimma, where the First Lady narrated how the widow was accused by family members of causing her husband’s death following a prolonged illness. The woman was reportedly pressured to undergo degrading traditional rituals before the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare stepped in to stop the situation.
Barr. Uzodimma described the incident as deeply disheartening, stressing that such harmful customs have long been abolished but still persist in some communities. She reiterated her strong stance against the ill-treatment of vulnerable women and called for collective efforts to protect widows from abuse.
According to her, beyond seeking justice, she also provided the widow with necessary support to help care for the children left behind by her late husband.
The intervention highlights ongoing efforts by the Imo State government and advocacy groups to eliminate harmful traditional practices, combat gender-based violence, and ensure that every woman is treated with dignity and respect.
