Can you imagine a popular Nigerian Islamic scholar being accused of supporting terrorism? That is exactly the massive drama that has just unfolded, shaking the foundations of national security discussions across the country.
A prominent human rights advocate, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, has publicly called out the Federal Government, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.
This is not a small matter at all. The lawyer insists that Gumi’s continuous public comments and controversial visits to various armed bandit camps are nothing short of encouraging terrorism in Nigeria.
“Aiding Evil”: Why Omirhobo Blew the Whistle
Omirhobo, in a strongly worded statement, did not mince words. He specifically titled his message: “Terrorism Apology is a Crime, Government Must Investigate and Prosecute Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.”
His core allegation is heavy: Gumi is openly defending these deadly bandits and insurgents.
According to the advocate, the Sheikh has repeatedly justified the actions of these dangerous elements. Instead of condemning them as ruthless criminals who are destroying lives and properties, Gumi allegedly portrays them as "misunderstood victims."
This kind of rhetoric, the lawyer argued, doesn't bring peace. It only serves to embolden the criminals who have already killed, kidnapped, and displaced thousands of innocent Nigerians.
Visitations and Advocacy: The Evidence
What makes this case really intense is Gumi’s established track record.
The scholar has been highly controversial for years, famously calling for negotiation and amnesty for these armed groups. His publicised visits to bandit camps in states like Kaduna and Zamfara always spark outrage.
Omirhobo expressed shock that the Federal Government has allowed this to continue.
He insists that Gumi’s actions—his "consistent public utterances, visitations to terrorist camps, and advocacy on their behalf"—raise serious concerns about his complicity and the promotion of terrorism, which directly threatens national security.
The Law Is Clear: No Shield for Anyone
The human rights lawyer stressed that no amount of religious status or public influence should protect anyone from the long arm of the law. Freedom of speech has limits, and it certainly does not cover promoting crime or violence.
Omirhobo cited clear constitutional and legal provisions. He pointed to sections of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which strictly bans any direct or indirect support for terrorist activities.
He didn’t stop there. He also referenced the Criminal Code Act, noting that such actions could be classified as treasonable offences, which are punishable by severe penalties, including life imprisonment or even death!
What Happens Next? The Demand to DSS and Police
Omirhobo is not just making noise; he wants action!
He has formally urged key security agencies and federal authorities—including the DSS (Department of State Services), the Nigeria Police Force, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the Attorney-General of the Federation—to kick off investigations immediately and proceed with prosecution where necessary.
While Sheikh Gumi has always maintained that dialogue, not force, is the only way to achieve peace in the North, critics believe his stance undermines all counter-terrorism efforts. This new move by a prominent lawyer might just force a definitive action from the Federal Government.
