The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has confirmed the dismissal of about 800 staff as part of a major restructuring exercise. The move, which took effect on November 5, 2025, is described by the company as a “rightsizing” effort to improve operational efficiency.
Originally, reports suggested that as many as 1,800 employees could be affected. However, union interventions led to the number being reduced to 800. The affected staff have been issued discharge letters, which include details on clearance procedures and entitlement payments.
AEDC, which supplies electricity to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Niger, and Nasarawa states, insists that the layoffs are part of a broader strategy to transform operations and enhance service delivery. Analysts, however, warn that reducing staff alone may not address the deep-rooted issues in Nigeria’s power sector, which continues to face revenue shortfalls, frequent outages, and mounting operational challenges.
The layoffs have sparked reactions across social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over job losses in a period of economic hardship. Some industry watchers argue that while efficiency is necessary, worker welfare must not be overlooked, especially in a sector critical to the nation’s development.
