Former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, Segun Showunmi, is seriously upset and has dropped a heavy message for the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC): Enough is Enough!
He is calling for immediate and stricter regulation of broadcast media, specifically pointing fingers at a major news channel and its most vocal anchor. Omo, the political gist is hot!
The Accusation: When Anchors Become The Story
Showunmi is furious about what he describes as a growing "lack of professionalism" on Nigerian television.
He did not mince words, condemning certain television hosts for abandoning serious journalism for what he calls pure "provocation" and "rudeness."
In his fiery statement, he said citizens invited to speak in good faith are being subjected to insult, "partisan aggression," and what he cleverly termed "empty intellectual showmanship."
He argues that while Nigerians might tolerate "excesses" from online commentators, it is completely unacceptable from licensed national broadcasters. The line must be drawn!
Who Is The Target? Showunmi Names Rufai Oseni!
The gloves are officially off! Showunmi pointed his biggest gun directly at a popular news channel and its star presenter.
He wrote: "#ARISEtv and its anchor, #ruffydfire (Rufai Oseni), have crossed too many lines."
He accused them of constituting themselves into "self-appointed prosecutors, judges, and enemies of the state" under the guise of being journalists!
This call comes right after the very heated live interview where Rufai Oseni challenged the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, about the cost and funding of the controversial Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project. The exchange was electric, and now the fallout is scattering the ground!
The Demand: Regulation Is Not Repression
Showunmi is urging the Ministry of Information and the NBC to wake up and act immediately.
He warned that the supervising Ministry must not stand by while the "madness must stop."
His core argument? "Freedom of expression is not freedom to abuse. Regulation is not repression; it is the defence of sanity and national interest." For him, what is happening on air is an attack on the very idea of order in Nigeria!
The Backlash: Activist Fires Back!
But the drama did not end there! Showunmi’s call was instantly met with a brutal clap back from human rights activist Mahdi Shehu.
Shehu accused Showunmi of being a hypocrite and a "sellout" looking for a new opportunity. He even suggested that Showunmi should approach the Presidency to "shut down Arise, Premium Times, Sahara Reporters, etc." so that evil can triumph over falsehood!
It is clear this is a battle not just over professionalism, but over who gets to challenge power in Nigeria.
