The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially brought academic activities to a complete standstill across the nation.
The fallout? Ongoing second semester examinations at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) were instantly disrupted on Monday as lecturers withdrew their services.
The reason is simple: ASUU’s National body has commenced a two-week warning strike to push the Federal Government into finally honoring their long-standing 2009 agreements.
Total Shut Down in Benin
The chaos started immediately at UNIBEN.
According to a source within the students’ union body, many students who arrived ready to write their papers were left disappointed.
“Not all students wrote their exams today. Some did while others did not. It all depends on the faculty and department,” the source revealed.
However, the UNIBEN ASUU chapter quickly confirmed that compliance was total.
Professor Enaruna Edosa, the UNIBEN ASUU Chairman, boasted that compliance from members was "100 per cent!"
“We held a congress today, directing all members of the union to comply with the order from the national body,” he said. “The strike is for two weeks, and we went round to ensure that our members comply with the directives, and that they are not in classes.”
AAU Follows Suit: Total Compliance!
The strike action was not limited to UNIBEN. It also recorded massive success at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.
Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, the AAU ASUU chairman, confirmed in a telephone interview that every single member complied with the national directive.
“AAU fully complied with the national directives on the warning strike,” Dr. Onogbosele stated. “We also held a congress today to deliberate on the matter and we have resolved to abide by the resolution of ASUU national. So, we have started.”
SUG Confirms Suspension: Stay Calm
Earlier in the day, the UNIBEN Students’ Union Government (SUG) had already released a circular to inform the students about the grim development.
The statement, signed by Ahonsi Godwin, Director of Information/PRO, officially confirmed the suspension of all exams.
“As a result, all ongoing and scheduled examinations across faculties have been suspended until further notice. Academics have been directed to withdraw from all examination duties and mobilize accordingly,” the circular read.
Students have been advised to remain calm and avoid panic while waiting for updates only from official SUG channels.
This two-week period means a total freeze on academic life. Will the Federal Government act before the two weeks are up? Only time will tell.
