Donald Trump has publicly called for the imprisonment of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, after they opposed his use of National Guard forces and immigration enforcement efforts in Chicago.
Trump branded both leaders as failing to protect ICE officers and pointed to Johnson’s executive order creating an “ICE‑Free Zone” in the city. He also defended troop deployment to Chicago despite strong objections from local and state authorities.
In response, Johnson called Trump’s move yet another attempt at targeting a Black man unjustly, while Pritzker warned of authoritarian overreach and vowed to resist. Neither has been formally charged with a crime.
As Texas National Guard troops gather near Chicago—and legal challenges mount—a national spotlight falls on how far federal power can intrude into state and city governance. The showdown could reshape rules around law enforcement, immigration, and local autonomy.
