A section of the Rivers State Government Secretariat in Port Harcourt was engulfed in flames on Monday morning, causing panic among workers and residents in the area.
According to reports from The Cable, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. However, it was confirmed that the section affected houses the Rivers State Pension Board.
Firefighters Rush to the Scene
Eyewitnesses said thick smoke could be seen billowing from the secretariat complex as firefighters from both the State and Federal Fire Services battled tirelessly to contain the blaze.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Honour Sirawoo, confirmed the incident to newsmen. While he did not reveal if there were any casualties, he assured the public that emergency responders were working hard to bring the situation under control.
Incident Follows Recent Political Developments
This unfortunate incident comes just weeks after President Bola Tinubu recalled the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, along with members of the State House of Assembly.
It’s worth noting that Tinubu had earlier declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich state on March 18, 2025, following rising political tensions and security challenges in the region.
Public Reaction
As news of the fire spread, residents took to social media to express concern over the recurring crises in the state. Some called for a thorough investigation to determine whether the incident was accidental or politically motivated.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged calm and assured that efforts are ongoing to assess the level of damage and restore normalcy to government operations.
