This is not a story you want to hear on a Friday morning. News hitting our desks confirms that the dreaded Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a fierce faction of Boko Haram, has successfully launched a deadly ambush against a Nigerian Army convoy in Borno State.
The nation is in mourning as reliable military sources confirm that the cost of this attack was devastating, cutting short the lives of brave men who swore to protect Nigeria.
They Were Going For Clearance, Then Hell Broke Loose
The tragedy unfolded on Friday morning, October 17, 2025. The army convoy was reportedly heading towards Kawuri town, located in the Bama Local Government Area of Borno.
Their mission was clear: a critical clearance operation to flush out terrorists operating around the small Kawuri village. But the wicked insurgents had already laid a lethal trap. At about 9:45 am, the convoy drove straight into the ambush, and a fierce gun battle erupted.
Two Top Lieutenants Felled: The Commanders We Lost
The heartbreak is unbearable. Among the casualties are two highly respected and dedicated commanding officers. These were men who led from the front, and they paid the ultimate price.
We can confirm the identities of our fallen heroes:
- Lieutenant Colonel A.S. Paiko: The Commanding Officer (CO) of the 202 Tank Battalion.
- Lieutenant Colonel Col S.I. Iliyasu: The Commanding Officer (CO) of the 222 Battalion.
Reports suggest that while Colonel Paiko died instantly, there were frantic efforts to save Colonel Iliyasu, who was shot and evacuated to the military hospital in Maiduguri. Sadly, sources indicate he did not survive the heavy injuries sustained in the attack.
Many Soldiers Missing! The Search Continues
The loss is not limited to the commanders. Unconfirmed reports suggest that a yet-to-be-ascertained number of personnel of the Nigerian Army were tragically killed alongside their leaders.
Many others suffered serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment. Even more worryingly, some soldiers are still missing in action, raising fears of a higher casualty count.
This incident is a painful reminder that the war against terrorism in the North-East, despite official claims of defeat, is far from over. Our soldiers continue to face deadly ambushes from these well-armed and vicious groups.
