Hollywood powerhouse Whoopi Goldberg has ignited a storm of reactions after suggesting that former US President Donald Trump be removed from office following his controversial United Nations address.
What She Said on The View
During a recent episode of The View, Goldberg didn’t mince words. She described Trump’s UN performance as “unhelpful” and “not presidential,” and went on to say she was “worried” about his capacity to lead. She even floated invoking the 25th Amendment a constitutional mechanism that allows for removal of a president deemed unfit to serve.
She added:
> “If Biden had behaved like this, I’d say ‘take him.’ This was not presidential.”
Co-host Sunny Hostin joined in, calling parts of Trump’s UN speech “inflationary and misleading,” particularly around his claims on immigration and war.
The Speech That Started It All
Trump’s UN speech was rocky from the start. A teleprompter failure forced him to improvise parts of his remarks — a moment he joked about mid-address, saying whoever ran the teleprompter was in “big trouble.”
He also took aim at the UN, accusing it of backing policies harmful to the West, all while insisting the organization had done little to support U.S. peace efforts.
The UN later clarified that the escalator stoppage he experienced was caused by an automatic safety mechanism triggered by someone in the crowd. And the teleprompter was reportedly operated by the White House, not UN staff.
The Backlash Was Immediate
Goldberg’s remarks stirred fierce debate online. Critics accused her of political bias and selective outrage:
Some asked why she hasn’t made similar comments when past presidents of other parties have delivered questionable speeches.
Others argued she misrepresents the 25th Amendment, pointing out it’s for serious incapacity, not mere disagreement.
A few social media users mocked the suggestion outright, calling it dramatic or unhinged.
Yet another flashpoint: her remark about Biden that she would have called for his removal under similar behavior, didn’t sit well with many.
What This Means Politically
This isn’t just celebrity talk. It cuts into key national conversations: how far can public figures go in criticizing a former president? When does impeachment talk or invoking constitutional provisions cross lines? And how mush do public perceptions shape calls for accountability, however extreme.
The 25th Amendment is no small tool — it’s designed for moments when a leader is incapable of fulfilling the role, not for political squabbles. Many constitutional scholars say applying it here would set a dangerous precedent.
What do you think? Did Whoopi cross a line, or was she speaking truth to power? Let me know in the comments!
