Mourinho Returns Home: Benfica Appoint “The Special One” Until June 2027

José Mourinho has officially signed his contract with Benfica, marking a dramatic return to the club where he once began his managerial journey. The deal, confirmed today, will run until June 2027 and signals the start of a new chapter for both Mourinho and the Portuguese giants.

The move comes just hours after the dismissal of Bruno Lage, whose shocking Champions League defeat to Qarabag left Benfica searching for immediate answers. At 62, Mourinho arrives with a wealth of experience, having managed Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Roma, winning major trophies everywhere he went.

Reports confirm that the contract includes a break clause, allowing either side to walk away after the 2025/26 season if needed. But for now, Benfica fans are buzzing at the thought of their club being led once again by “The Special One.” His first big test will be against Chelsea on September 30 in the Champions League, followed by a clash with Real Madrid in January.

This comeback also carries political weight, with Benfica’s presidential elections scheduled for October. Mourinho’s arrival is widely seen as a bold statement from the club’s leadership, aimed at uniting fans and restoring belief after a shaky start to the season.

With the pressure already on, all eyes will be on Mourinho to see if he can deliver silverware and bring back the glory days at the Estádio da Luz. One thing is certain — wherever Mourinho goes, football never stays quiet.
