Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Government in Exile, appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday, marking the commencement of his terrorism trial. Observers noted that Ekpa appeared visibly aged and somber during the proceedings.
Arrest and Allegations
Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen, was arrested in November 2024 on suspicion of engaging in terror-related activities. Prosecutors allege that he used social media platforms to incite violence and unrest in Nigeria's South-East region as part of his secessionist campaign. They are seeking a six-year prison sentence, asserting that his actions may constitute terrorism under Finnish law.
Denial of Charges
During interrogations, Ekpa denied allegations of ordering weapons for pro-Biafra groups and refuted other charges leveled against him. He leads the Autopilot faction, a breakaway group from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which has been linked to various attacks in Nigeria's South-East and South-South regions. IPOB has consistently denied involvement in these incidents.
IPOB's Stance
Following Ekpa's arrest, the IPOB faction loyal to Nnamdi Kanu distanced themselves from him, stating that he was never a member of their organization.
The trial continues as Finnish authorities examine the extent of Ekpa's alleged activities and their implications under national and international law.
