A Finnish court has officially released Simon Ekpa from detention, bringing an end to the legal proceedings that have trailed the controversial Biafra agitator in recent times.
Simon Ekpa Walks Free in Finland
Simon Ekpa, known for his vocal support of Biafra’s secessionist movement and his role as a self-styled “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has regained his freedom following a court decision in Finland.
The news broke on Monday, June 17, when Ekpa took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to share the outcome of his legal battle. He expressed gratitude to his supporters and legal team, revealing that the court ruled in his favor and granted his release.
What Led to Ekpa’s Detention?
Ekpa’s detention stemmed from allegations linked to his political activism and reported connections to unrest in parts of southeastern Nigeria. Authorities in Finland had launched investigations into his activities amid mounting pressure from Nigerian officials and citizens abroad who accused him of inciting violence back home.
However, the recent ruling appears to clear him of any legal wrongdoing under Finnish law — at least for now.
Ekpa Thanks Supporters, Stays Defiant
In his public statement, Ekpa praised his legal counsel and hailed the support he received from his followers. He also hinted that his pro-Biafra campaign is far from over.
“Victory for Biafrans,” he wrote, boldly declaring that the court’s decision was a step forward in what he describes as the liberation of his people.
Nigerian Government Yet to Respond
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian government has not issued an official response to Ekpa’s release. Many are watching closely to see whether Abuja will take further steps, including possible diplomatic pressure or legal actions through international channels.
Ekpa’s Influence and Controversies
Simon Ekpa has remained a polarizing figure both within Nigeria and abroad. While some hail him as a freedom fighter, others criticize him for allegedly fueling tension in the South-East through his regular broadcasts and directives, particularly calls for sit-at-home orders that have disrupted lives and businesses.
Despite the controversies, his loyal followers continue to view him as a key voice in the Biafran struggle.
What do you think about Simon Ekpa’s release? Should the Nigerian government respond?
